Leigh Syndrome: Cranial MRI and MR Spectroscopy Findings
نویسندگان
چکیده
A 10 years old girl, was admitted to the intensive care unit with seizure, myotonic-clonic jerks in her hands, vomiting, respiratory failure and mild metabolic acidosis. Brain Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and proton MR spectroscopy(MRS) were performed. The MRI findings presented symmetric basal ganglia, brain stem, left thalamus and subthalamic nuclei involvement. MRS obtained from the basal ganglia and thalamus lesions, showed increased lactate and choline peak, decreased NAA\Crea and NAA\Cho ratios. In the CSF, there was also increased lactate. These imaging findings, clinical course and the laboratory data were used for the diagnosis of Juvenile form of Leigh syndrome. Muscle biopsy wasn’t needed for the diagnosis.

Leigh syndrome: MRI findings in two children
Leigh syndrome is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder of childhood. The symmetrical necrotic lesions in the basal ganglia and/or brainstem which appear as hyperintense lesions on T2-weighted MRI is characteristic and one of the essential diagnostic criteria. Recognising this MR imaging pattern in a child with neurological problems should prompt the clinician to investigate for Leigh syndro...
متن کامل18F-FDG PET/CT findings in a possible MELAS syndrome: A case study
Mitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome is a rare congenital disorder of mitochondrial DNA, presenting a wide range of clinical symptoms comprising headaches, seizures, aphasia, hearing loss, visual defects, and hemiparesis. Herein we report a case of a previously asymptomatic 40-year-old male who presented with recurrent headache, seiz...
متن کاملRelation of behavior problems with findings of cranial diffusion tensor MRI and MR spectroscopy in autistic children.
PURPOSE To investigate any relation of behavior problems with cranial Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) findings in autism spectrum disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 20 males children (12 autistic patients and 8 healthy controls) was examined by cranial DTI and MRS. The Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) was used to calculate the irritability, l...
متن کاملCranial MRI scans are indicated in all girls with central precocious puberty.
AIMS (1) To assess the value of cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans in the investigation of girls with central precocious puberty (CPP); and (2) to determine the clinical predictors of abnormal cranial MRI scans in these patients. METHODS A retrospective study of 67 girls diagnosed with CPP who underwent cranial MRI scans at diagnosis. Patients with neurological signs or symptoms a...
متن کاملLeigh syndrome in a 3-year-old boy with unusual brain MR imaging and pathologic findings.
We report unusual MR serial imaging and electron microscopy findings in a 3-year-old boy who had Leigh syndrome with cytochrome-c oxidase (cox) deficiency. The MR imaging findings included periventricular white matter involvement, posteroanterior progression, and extension through the corpus callosum and internal capsule; however, no basal ganglia or brain stem abnormality was found, which was ...
